On December 1, 1955, in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks, at the age of 42, refused to give up here seat on the city bus to make room for a white passenger.  Parks’ quiet courageous act of defiance was an important symbol of the modern Civil Rights Movement that changed America, its view of black people, and redirected the course of history.
